Livestock in the Seronga region face threats while grazing in the veld and while resting at night. Though effective herding is a major challenge, we have put forward a project to build effective livestock enclosures (kraals) that protect livestock at night. With funding from the National Geographic's Big Cat Initiative, we have built 5 so far! It was our intention to show villagers what strong, lion-proof kraals can look like using sustainably harvested materials and traditional weaving skills. It appears out efforts have gained some traction! The program has attracted the attention of many of the villagers who have asked for help in building their own kraals.
We plan to continue our kraal building effort as part of a larger initiative to encourage stonger livestock husbandry practices. Over time we will incorporate herder training and livestock insurance. Very excited about the opportunity to work with villagers to increase livestock protection and lion populations!
